What is a Composite Material?

In today’s world, there is a rising need to create new materials with superior mechanical properties and lightweight, which cannot be found in classic materials such as steel, aluminium or other metals. Composite materials have been used since ancient times; for example, wood and concrete are composite materials. Currently they have

But, which is the definition of composite materials?

Composite materials combine different materials to create one with unique, tailored properties.

The two main constituents of composite materials are:

  • Matrix: its primary function is to join the reinforcements between them and transfer the loads among reinforcements. Other types of functions are to protect the reinforcements from impacts.
  • Reinforcement: it provides strength and stiffness. It can be present as long and short fibres or even as particles.
